Satavahanas
Satavahanas were the first of the major dynasties of Andhra that ruled a huge part of Deccan from the second century BC into the third century AD.
The dynasty was based from Dharanikota (Amaravati) in Andhra Pradesh and Junnar (Pune) and Prathistan (Paithan) in Maharashtra, the first and third being their capital cities at different times.
The satavahanas declared independence after the death of Asoka (232 BC), as the Mauryan Empire began to weaken.
They ruled a large empire that withstood the onslaughts from the Central Asia of the Scythian invaders and successfully protecting peninsular and central India.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Satavahana portraits on the coins is that the king's matrilinear line.
