Madras Presidency 



The Nizam of Hyderabad ceded the Northern Circas to East India Company in 1766 AD. 

The coinage of the ceded territory consisted of gold Pagodas, silver Rupees and copper Dubs.

The copper dub was rated 1/48 to a Rupee was not accepted by the government in payment, with the result of the market fluctuated often by 10% on a single given day.

To end this situation, an order was placed with the Soho mint, Birmingham, England in 1794 and 1797.

The features of this coin included striking of legends into the raised rim and incused lettering designed by Mathew Boulton to face wear and tear.

Specifics of the coin shown below 

Obverse  - Arms and supporters of the East India Company resting on a scroll bearing the incused inscription: AUSPICIO REGIS ET SENATUS ANGLIAE below and in a sunken panel at the bottom of the rim is a relief inscription : 48 to ONE RUPEE 
Reverse  - Balemark of the company surrounded by a broad flat rim. On the incused legend  : United East India Company 1797.
Mint  - Soho mint, Birmingham 
Width - 33 mm
Weight  - 14.35 gm
