16 Local Janapadas
5. Saurashtra Janapada
Saurashtra Janapada was located in the modern Saurashtra, in the state of Gujarat. Most Saurashtra coins are found in the south, in Junagarh district.
Most of the coins from Saurashtra are approximately 1 gm in weight. The coins are uniface however most are over struck / restruck with the same or different symbol, sometimes more than several items, over the Saurashtra coins and thus there is often the remnant of previous symbol on the reverse, as well as sometimes under the obverse symbol as well. The symbols include animals (bull, elephant etc) goddess (Lakshmi)and the mangalam (auspicious) 'Srivatsa' symbol. They are dated approximately 450 BC.
