16 Local Janapadas
6. Kalinga Janapada
Kalinga Janapada was an ancient kingdom of eastern India. It was probably part of Ashmaka Mahajanapada. The Mauryans under Asoka managed to subdue Kalinga during 260 BC with the war influencing Asoka to repent for the carnage and destruction caused and ended with him adopting Buddhist dharma.
Kharevela was the greatest king of Kalinga and the earliest known king of Kalinga from calligraphic sources. He was the author of the famous Hatigumpha inscription and constantly fought the Mauryans.
The coins of Kalinga bear a candleburn as its distinguishing feature with sometimes a scorpion. They bear 4 punches, are struck to the Karshapana Standard weighing approximately 3 g and dated 500 - 260 BC.
