Chola dynasty - 300 BC - 1280 AD
Sangam Age
One of the triumvirate and the longest ruling dynasty of the Sangam Era.
The capital of Sangam Cholas was Urayiur. Their second capital was Kaveripoompatinam, which was also their chief port. They held the entire country South of Thungabhadra for a period of two centuries.
This dynasty under the reign of Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola become a military, economic and cultural power in South Asia and South - East Asia and spread its wings to Sri Lanka, Maldives, Peeru, Panai, Cahaya and Sri Vijaya of Malaysia.
The Chola fleet represented the zenith of ancient Indian sea power.
The Asoka pillars between 273 - 232 BC mention the Cholas whom were on friendly terms with him.
The dynasty emblem is Tiger.
The most popular among the Cholas was Karikala Chola who defeated the Cheras and Pandyas of that time. He had defeated a confederacy of nine princes in another battle and had extended the kingdom beyond Kanchipuram in the North.
They went into decline in the 13th century with the rise of Pandyan dynasty.
