Alupas of Udupi
Tulu dynasty of coastal Karnataka, Alupas influenced on the coastal and northern Konkan for over 12 centuries.
They were feudatories of Kadambas during the second century and later to Chalukyas, Rashtrakudas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara kings.
The last of their lineage was Kulasekharadeva Alupendradeva who ruled till 14444 AD.
Alupas followed the matrilinear inheritance.
They are one of the earliest of the medieval kings to have introduced gold Pagodas and Fanams of high purity sourced from their trade with the Romans, Arabs and Gangas.
Coins of Kannada legend were minted at Mangalore and Devanagari or old (hale) Kannada at Udupi.
