Sangam Age

Pandya(n) Empire  

Pandya, Chera and Chola are the principal dynasties of Sangam Age of Tamils. Sangam derives its name due to the sangama or the literary convertions held during the period of cultural awakening.

No other dynasty in the world had ruled for more duration than the Pandyas.Their reign spanned from 6th century BC to the mid 17th century AD, till the early British conquest.

Initially Pandyas ruled from the southern tip of Korkai and moved on to Madurai.Meenakshi Amman temple and Nellaiappar temples were built by this mighty empire.

From being the Jains from the early period, latter took to Shaivism during the latter part of rule.

They expanded to the Andhra and Kalinga and conquered Sri Lanka and are accredited to having diplomatic relations with the Roman Empire.
