(16. Avanti Mahajanapada)
Avanti or Avantika Mahajanapada was ruled by the Yadava kings. Avanti corresponds to the present day Malwa region, with the great city of Ujjain (also known as Avanti) as it's capital. Avanti was divided into north and south by river Vetravati (Betwa) separated by Vindhya mountains; north part had its capital at Ujjaini and southern part had its capital at Mahishmati. The kingdom remained independent until about 403 BC when it was conquered by Emperor Sisunaga of the Magadha Empire.
The coins comprise of geometric OMEGA shaped symbol surrounded by tourine symbols, semi circles and circles. They weigh approximately 1.3 g based on the 6 - mashaka standard and date to 500 - 400 BC.
