16 Local Janapadas
1. Andhra Janapada

Andhra Janapada was one of the hundreds of Local Janapadas that existed in different parts of the country. The ancient region of Andhra Janapada was located between Godavari and Krishna rivers. The capital city was Dhanakataka, modern Bezwada. The inscriptions of Asoka mention Andhra as one of the Mauryan territory.

The coins bear 4 punches, one of which is always an elephant that appears to have been the dynamic crest of the Andhra. Another common symbol on the coins is that of a leafed tree. Interestingly, none of the coins display any imperial symbols viz the sun or 6 - arm solar symbol, confirming these are local issues.  They weigh approximately 1.7 g  (1/2 Karshapana Standard) and dated to 500 BC.

Due to recent find spots, coins earlier classified as Andhra are now referred to as Vidharbha Janapada.
