16 MAHAJANAPADAS
7. Panchala Mahajanapada
7. Panchala Mahajanapada
Panchala Mahajanapada was located in Uttar Pradesh, originally stretching from Himalayas to river Chambal. However, at some point, it was divided into two parts. Uttar (or northern) Panchala consisted of the Rohilkhand area north of Ganges, with it's capital at Ahichhatra; Dakshin (or southern)Panchala comprised the area south of Ganges and north of Chambal, with it's capital at Kampila in modern Farukhabad district. The famous city of Kanyakubja or Kanauj was situated in the kingdom of Panchala. Sometime in the first half of 600 BC, Uttar Panchala was conquered by the Kurus, and only Dakshin Panchala remained independent. It was eventually absorbed into the Magadhan Empire by Mahapadmananda around 350 BC.
The coins dated approximately 400 - 350 BC bears a composite geometric symbol of a hollow or solid circle with ancillary symbols, weighs 0.3 g and are usually found in Uttarakhand and Chambal Valley.
