Western Chalukyas of Kalyani - 973 - 1289 AD
They ruled the Western Deccan and had their lineage from the Chalukyas of Badami of the 6th century.
They rose to power by overthrowing the Rashtrakuda king, Manyaketha and established their capital at at Kalyani, modern day Basavakalyan.
They were called Western Chalukyas to be distinguished from their contemporaneous Chalukyas of Vengi, situated in the East.
During their reign Kannada language flourished which displaced Sanskrit and Prakrit.
One feudatory of Chalukyas of Kalyani, was Vinayadatta, whose successors later became powerful and established the Hoysala Empire.
